Date :Mid 1900s (20th Century)
Provenance : France

A large, sculptural French ceramic temple jar dating to the early to mid-20th century. This striking piece features a tall, tapered form with a triple-tiered gourd-shaped lid, finished in a layered, mottled blue glaze ranging from cobalt to navy. The profile draws inspiration from apothecary vessels and Asian temple jars, reinterpreted through the refined, organic aesthetic of French studio pottery.
The body is wheel-thrown and showcases expressive glaze variation, pooling, and drip marks—hallmarks of small-batch artisanal firing. The oxidation on the unglazed base, wear to the foot ring, and subtle glaze irregularities point to authentic aging and use, supporting a production date of circa 1940s–1950s. The underside bears the artist’s signature, along with what appears to be a code or firing reference, offering traceable provenance as a unique studio work from southern France.
This jar serves as both a statement sculptural object and a decorative lidded vessel, ideal for Mediterranean, wabi-sabi, or minimalist interiors. Its form, presence, and surface texture make it an ideal feature for console tables, shelving, or curated entryway displays.
