Large antique French white cruche pot dating to the early 20th century and attributed to Provence. Made from glazed terracotta, this water jug has an opaque ivory glaze and two loop handles and a well-fitting matching lid. Once used to draw and store water, it is offered today for decorative display, with its restrained monochrome glaze and balanced form to create exceptional sculptural presence.

Provençal gargoulettes were everyday kitchen and table vessels. This example with its intact, well-fitting lid is especially desirable, as many surviving French water jugs have lost theirs.

Today, this large white terracotta jug is decorative pottery for vintage kitchen decor. Display it on open shelving or with dried stems. Its sculptural form suits French country decor, farmhouse decor and Mediterranean decor; the neutral glaze also complements organic modern, wabi sabi decor and Japandi spaces.
