Very Rare antique French yellow cruche pot dating to the late 18th century, with a beautiful richly aged patina shaped by more than two centuries of use. Hand thrown from terracotta in Provence, Southern France, and covered with a warm mustard-yellow glaze. This large pottery water jug belongs to the regional gargoulette and cruche traditions, with a rounded body, substantial overhead handle and an unusually raised pouring mouth. 

Produced within the traditional pottery culture of Provence, glazed terracotta cruches were robust household vessels made for carrying, storing and pouring water. Most surviving gargoulettes have considerably narrower filling or pouring necks, making this vessel’s oversized open spout particularly distinctive. Its thick applied handle, visible throwing lines, glaze pooling, fine crazing and broad areas of exposed rose terracotta retain the direct character of its handmade construction and prolonged working history.

Display this large antique French yellow pot as a sculptural statement vessel on a farmhouse table, console, kitchen dresser, sideboard or open shelf. It can be styled independently or with dried branches; fresh flowers should be placed inside a watertight liner. The mustard glaze and timeworn terracotta work naturally with French country decor, rustic home decor, Mediterranean decor, Provence decor and collected antique pottery.
