19th Century French Green Glazed Pottery Jug
Rare antique French green glazed terracotta jug dating to the late 19th century. The glaze varies from olive and moss green to warm brown, with scattered losses revealing orange clay beneath. The pot has a stylized color and a decorative incised zigzag band circling the shoulder.
Known as a cruche à huile, or oil jug, this traditional French form was designed for storing and pouring oil. It belongs to the tradition of terre vernissée, glazed earthenware made for everyday domestic use, with its incised decoration and individually shaped handle adding character to a practical household object.
Display it as a flower vase with dried stems, place it on a kitchen dresser, or use it as a table centerpiece. Its earthy colour and worn surface complement French country decor, Mediterranean decor and wabi sabi decor, paired with natural linen, aged wood and simple ceramics.
