Collection : Vintage/Antique Objects
Date :Mid 1900s (20th Century)
Provenance : Central Africa
Style : Tribal Art
Hand-carved African wooden mask featuring tribal facial motifs, white pigment coating, and stylized facial abstraction. Oval in shape with hollowed interior and side drill holes, this sculptural mask draw elements from Fang ceremonial art and Kwele traditions of Central Africa.
Kwele masks are traditionally coated with white pigment symbolizing purity and ancestral power, and were used in Bwete rituals to ward off evil and promote harmony. Fang masks, typically used in initiation ceremonies, share the elongated brows and minimalist facial construction seen here.
This decorative interpretation makes a strong wall accent for bohemian, global folk, or wabi-sabi inspired interiors.
