This antique French confit pot with lid, also known as a pot à conserve, was crafted in the historic pottery town of Martres Tolosane in the late 19th century. Made of stoneware and finished in a soft white glaze, it features twin loop handles, a domed lid with knob, and a rounded body tapering to a narrow foot. Subtle glaze imperfections, and rim wear highlight its provincial authenticity.
Martres Tolosane has been a renowned ceramic center since the 18th century, celebrated for both decorative faience and utilitarian wares. This example reflects the practical side of its production, designed for household storage before the widespread adoption of modern containers. The survival of its original lid enhances its rarity and value for collectors of French pottery.
Today, this vessel is equally appreciated as a decorative urn, rustic storage jar, or sculptural display piece. Its generous proportions, intact lid, and understated glaze make it a versatile accent for farmhouse kitchens, Mediterranean rustic spaces, and wabi-sabi interiors where authentic materials and aged patina are celebrated.
