Antique Spanish Fajalauza lebrillo decorative bowl from Granada, Andalusia, dating to the 19th century. This hand-thrown ceramic piece features a rare and stylized hand-painted central bird motif in deep cobalt blue, surrounded by scrolling foliage. This scarce early Fajalauza bird design is distinguished by its upright posture and expressive wings. Surrounding the bird is a dense composition of cobalt floral scrolls and radiating fan-shaped border motifs, elements rooted in Moorish-Andalusian ceramic tradition. In early Granada iconography, symbolic birds represented protection, vigilance, and good fortune. This traditional earthenware bowl shows the characteristic deep lebrillo form and pierced hanging holes intended for wall display in Andalusian homes.
Produced in Granada, Spain, this piece belongs to the long Fajalauza pottery tradition that began in the 16th century, rooted in Hispano-Moresque ceramic heritage. Its thick terracotta body, unglazed reverse, and rustic imperfections speak to centuries of artisanal continuity. Lebrillos were traditionally used in Andalusian homes for preparing dough, washing produce, or marinating foods, later evolving into highly decorative bowls prized for display.
This decorative bowl works beautifully as a wall hanging ceramic, table centerpiece, or Mediterranean serving bowl for special occasions. Ideal for Spanish pottery collectors, it is a strong choice for Mediterranean Decor, Rustic Home Decor, Wabi Sabi, and Japandi interiors, while adding authentic Andalusian character to contemporary homes.
